When we think of psychoanalysis the first thing that comes to mind are couches, dreams, and hidden desires. Did you know it was born in Vienna, Austria?
This revolutionary approach was developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century until his death, and its goal was (and still is) to uncover the unconscious mind, exploring how repressed thoughts and childhood experiences shape who we are.
Freud’s theories on dreams, the “id, ego, and superego,” and his idea of talk therapy laid the foundation for modern psychology.
If you’re ever in Vienna, visit the Sigmund Freud Museum, located in his former apartment and office. It’s a fascinating peek into the birthplace of ideas that still influence psychology, art, and culture around the world.
