⚡Licitar Hearts: Croatia’s Symbol of Love and Tradition ❤️
Discover the sweet history behind these iconic gingerbread hearts
Licitars are colorfully decorated gingerbread hearts that have become a beloved symbol of Zagreb and Croatian culture.
Dating back to the 16th century, these edible creations were used as tokens of love, often gifted by young men to their sweethearts. Made from a simple honey dough, licitars are hand-shaped, baked, and intricately decorated with vibrant colors and patterns.
Though technically edible, they're usually kept as ornaments or souvenirs rather than treats. These charming hearts are also used as Christmas tree decorations and wedding favors, making them a true Croatian treasure.
In 2010, licitars were inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

And one last thing - this publication will stay free forever, but if you feel I deserve a cup of matcha 🍵 here and there, then please buy me some - the next drink’s on me! ☕
I think I would keep them as an ornament because they look too pretty to eat. Honey dough sounds devine, though.
I think they're gorgeous !
Someone would have to give me two- one to save us an ornament and want to eat 😂
They sound absolutely delicious but they are beautiful 😍
