Malta is home to the world’s oldest free-standing structures: the Megalithic Temples.
Dating back to 3600 BCE, these awe-inspiring prehistoric sites—like Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, and Mnajdra – are even older than Stonehenge, Newgrange or the Pyramids of Egypt.
These temples were built using massive limestone blocks, and were likely places of worship, featuring intricate carvings and altars. The Ġgantija Temples, named after the Maltese word for “giants,” were so massive that locals once believed they were built by giants!
Today, the temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remain a fascinating glimpse into Malta’s prehistoric past and its early civilization. A must-see!
