Sabiha Gökçen is celebrated as the world’s first female combat pilot and one of Turkey’s most iconic figures.
An adopted daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, Gökçen broke barriers in aviation when she joined the Turkish Air Force in the 1930s.
Her achievements were groundbreaking, especially in a time when aviation—and military roles—were dominated by men. Gökçen’s skills earned her international fame, and she went on to inspire generations of women in Turkey and beyond.
Today, Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport is named in her honor, an appropriate tribute to her courage and pioneering spirit. She symbolizes Turkey’s dedication to progress, equality, and modernity.
