Austria’s Sacher Cake (Sachertorte) is no ordinary dessert—it’s a piece of culinary history. The cake was created in 1832 by 16-year-old apprentice Franz Sacher for Austrian royalty, and this decadent chocolate cake has been a national treasure ever since. Made with dense chocolate sponge, a layer of apricot jam, and a glossy dark chocolate icing, the cake is served with unsweetened whipped cream.
You can find Sachertorte in bakeries across Vienna, and among the most notable places to try the “original” recipe are Café Sacher Wien, Café Demel, Café Diglas and Café Central.
