Scotch whisky, or simply Scotch, is one of Scotland’s most famous exports, with a history dating back over 500 years.
The first official record of Scotch production was in 1494 when Friar John Cor was commissioned to distil “aqua vitae” for the king. This potent spirit, whose name comes from the Gaelic "uisge beatha" (meaning “water of life”), became central to Scottish culture.
Over the centuries, whisky has evolved, with the Excise Act of 1823 making legal production easier and allowing Scotch to become a global phenomenon. Today, over 100 distilleries are producing single malt and blended whisky.
So, whether you prefer it neat or on the rocks — “slàinte mhath”!
