Did you know that the beloved Christmas carol Silent Night (Stille Nacht) was born in a small Austrian village?
The lyrics were written in 1818 by a young priest, Joseph Mohr, and set to music by schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber, after which it was first performed on Christmas Eve at a church in Oberndorf.
The song’s melody and message of peace quickly spread across Europe, and it’s now sung in over 300 languages worldwide.
Today, you can visit Oberndorf’s Silent Night Chapel, dedicated to this timeless Christmas classic and its origins.
