Austrian Empress Elisabeth, or Sissi, was much more than a royal icon. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and free spirit, and became famous when she married Emperor Franz Joseph at just 16. Her life as empress wasn’t the fairy tale it seemed – Sissi struggled with court restrictions and personal tragedy, including the death of her son. She became a wanderer, traveling Europe and writing poetry, earning admiration for her rebellious nature – many European locations boast her statues, busts or plaques about her visit.
Her assassination in 1898 only deepened her legend.
Today, her legacy lives on in Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace and the Sisi Museum, offering a glimpse into the life of this fascinating, and very complicated figure.
