Caravaggio’s “Basket of Fruit” (c. 1599) is more than just a simple still-life painting—it’s a masterpiece rich in symbolism.
The basket, filled with fruit showing signs of decay, serves as a reminder of the fragility and transience of life.
Some scholars suggest the imperfections in the fruit symbolize the decline of the Church, while others see it as a metaphor for the fleeting beauty of life.
Either way, it remains one of Caravaggio's most celebrated works!
You can find this stunning painting in Milan’s Biblioteca Ambrosiana, and other Sunday Art Snapshots here.
