Antwerp’s Sint-Annatunnel was built in 1931 and is still fully functional―its 572 meters connect the older and newer parts of Antwerp under the Schelde River. The tunnel was built for pedestrians instead of building a bridge which would interfere with river transport.
It is not just a passage, although from the above photo it might seem underwhelming―it’s a journey through history with its original art-deco tiles and wooden escalators, marvels of their time. Also, both entrance buildings add to its historic charm.
Today, thanks to some modern updates, this vintage tunnel continues to serve thousands of pedestrians and cyclists daily.
