The Sicilian flag is a vibrant mix of red and yellow, featuring the ancient Trinacria/triskelion symbol—a three-legged figure that reflects the triangular shape of the island.
Dating back to the 13th century, this flag has deep roots in Greek mythology, with the central figure of Medusa, the mythical Gorgon, symbolizing protection and power. The flag’s bold colors represent Palermo and Corleone, central to the fight for independence during the Sicilian Vespers rebellion in 1282.
Today, it stands as a proud symbol of Sicily’s unique cultural identity and independence.

Even though I’m Italian, I didn’t know the symbolism behind the Sicilian flag! Shame on me !
Thanks for enlightening me, Gabi!
At first glance, the flag didn't translate as "unique" to me but after reading the historical context and looking at it again, I'd admit that it is unique but still a bit unsettling. There's something undeniably eerie about the triskelion's design, don't you think?
Maybe it's the conjoined legs, which seem to be moving in tandem, or the way the feet point outward, as if ready to take off at any moment. Still, after reading the flash facts about the flag, I can appreciate the Flag of Sicily for its bold, unconventional design as it is a testament to the island's rich history and cultural heritage.
