The two vertical bands of Malta’s flag ─ white and red ─ are rooted in legend from 1090 about Roger I of Sicily.
What makes the flag unique is the George Cross, displayed in the top left corner. Awarded by King George VI in 1942, the Cross recognized Malta’s extraordinary bravery during World War II, as the island endured one of the most intense bombing campaigns in history. It remains a symbol of the Maltese people’s resilience and courage.
The flag was officially adopted in 1964 upon independence and continues to be a symbol of the Maltese people’s resilience and courage.
