You’ve probably heard of The Maltese Falcon movie, but did you know this motif is rooted deep in Malta’s history?
According to legend, the Knights of St. John gifted an extravagant golden falcon to Emperor Charles V of Spain as a tribute in 1539. The falcon, covered in rare gems, mysteriously disappeared, giving rise to stories of its whereabouts.
This legend inspired a 1930 detective novel which was adapted into the famous noir film The Maltese Falcon (1941), starring Humphrey Bogart.
While the real falcon may never have been found, its story continues to fascinate visitors to Malta.
