Did you know tulips were first cultivated in Turkey long before they became the iconic flower of the Netherlands?
During the Ottoman Empire, tulips symbolized wealth, beauty, and paradise on earth. Known as “lale” in Turkish, tulips flourished in royal gardens and inspired what’s known as the Tulip Era in the 18th century, a period of art, culture, and elegance.
This flower was so treasured that the Ottomans forbade exporting tulip bulbs. Eventually, travelers brought them to Europe, sparking “Tulip Mania” in the Netherlands.
And not only that — the word “tulip” originates in the Turkish language: Turkish tülbend referred to a type of turban, so the name was given to the flower because it resembled turban shapes.
