⚡The Prime Meridian: Where Time Begins⚡
Global significance of Greenwich in navigation and timekeeping
Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its role in astronomy, navigation, and timekeeping.
The Prime Meridian, established in 1884 at the Royal Observatory, runs through Greenwich, marking zero degrees longitude and dividing the eastern and western hemispheres. This line became the starting point for global time measurement and helped create the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) standard.
The site also played a critical role in maritime history, providing key navigational tools for British explorers and sailors.
Today, visitors can stand with one foot in the east and one in the west at the observatory, enjoying stunning views of London and learning how Greenwich became the home of global time.
