Mdina, known as “The Silent City,” is a place where time slows down. This walled city dates back to Phoenician times, around the 8th century BC, and its quiet streets are filled with medieval and Baroque architecture. Mdina was also once Malta’s capital, and its highlights include the city walls, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Domvs Romana.
If you’re interested in etymology, you’ll be happy to know that the name of the city derives from the Arabic word madīnah (مدينة), meaning “town / city.”
Why is it nicknamed “the silent”?
Because cars are restricted in the old town, leaving you free to wander its narrow alleys, admire grand palaces, and enjoy panoramic views from the city walls.
Mdina is also featured in the Game of Thrones, where its walls act part of the King’s Landing.
