Surprise! The Sound of Music is a beloved classic worldwide, but it barely makes a blip in Austria. Despite the movie’s stunning Austrian landscapes and iconic soundtrack, most Austrians haven’t seen it and many aren’t even familiar with the Von Trapp family’s story — and many even hate it.
In Austria, the 1965 Hollywood film is often seen as overly sentimental and not historically accurate, focusing more on the Hollywood romance than on real Austrian culture.
